Esta disciplina tem como principal objetivo dar formação em tópicos relativos aos métodos fundamentais do estudo dos oceanos, tais como a hidrografia, massas de água e correntes oceânicas, abordando também os métodos instrumentais, numa perspetiva de introduzir os conhecimentos base sobre a física dos oceanos. Pretende-se também que os estudantes sejam capazes de manipular e trabalhar com dados oceanográficos e estabelecer relações com os tópicos lecionados nas aulas teóricas.
